AB OBJECTIVES: During the NGO networking workshop of Gujarat, the grass
root level NGOs wanted training workshops on HIV-AIDS. GAP-SIRMCE,
responded to the call and organised such training workshops to train the
trainers. METHODOLOGY: 12 workshops were held where 35 organisations
both rural and urban took part. After assesing the base line knowledge
about HIV and AIDS and drawing the expectations of the participants,
three and half days workshops were organised to train the probable
trainers. Different evaluation methodology were used to evaluate the
effectiveness of such training programmes. RESULT: Assesement showed
that, 80% of the volunteers from NGOs did not know many things about
AIDS and there were lots of myths around. At the end of workshop
achievements were evaluated and some major points came out like, a) they
could talk about sex freely, b) learned to talk about HIV-AIDS, c) got
confidence on themselves. CONCLUSION: Through such workshops NGO
networking was strengthened and basic requirements for starting such
programmes at local levels had been determined. GAP developed the
educational materials which will be distributed to each participated
organisation, which includes the manual for conduction such workshops.
GAP learned a lot about the feelings and values of the people from rural
areas about many issues around HIV and AIDS (oral sex, homosexuality,
condom use). Talking such issues and giving the values to it gave the
confidence to the facilitators.
